I wanted to mentor emerging photographers as a means to empowering a young person without the advantage of a 1st world education, to tell their stories through photography. The concept ‘Lightwarriors’ was developed as a platform from which to attract Corporate Social investment in learnerships for students. Teddy Sambu became the first Lightwarrior to be sponsored by African investment company, Imara Holdings Limited. The 25 year old from the sprawling township of Khayelitsha studied at the Cape Town School of Photography and under my mentorship graduated, and now has a full time job as a studio photographer at Woolworths.
